7/8/2023 0 Comments Petros' War by Alki ZeiThis is the central point I strive to make, both in writing this introduction and in co-editing the current Bookbird issue. Young readers across the globe deserve better they should not be deprived of the richness and joys that these books can bring into their lives. Greek and Greek-Cypriot literatures, as well as other literatures from non-English-speaking countries, deserve better. Three of the English translations of her books won the Batchelder Award, the most prestigious award for translated children's literature in the US and yet, here I was, not being able to assign a single text of hers to my English-speaking international children's literature students. As mentioned in that year's HCA Bookbird issue, Zei is an outstanding–perhaps the most outstanding–figure in Greek children's literature, with more than fifty books published outside Greece, in more than twenty languages (Freeman et al. Zei was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen award (HCA) in 2004. No Greek-Cypriot children's book was available in English and the only translated Greek novels I could find were four books by Alki Zei. I quickly realized that this was much harder than I had originally thought. Being a Greek-Cypriot, I wanted to include in my syllabus a children's book that came from my native language and culture. In the summer of 2010, I was a visiting professor at Central Michigan University, preparing to teach a course on international children's literature.

7/8/2023 0 Comments Luster by Raven LeilaniAnd some of the most vulnerable subjects for me, I guess, are art and intimacy and failure. Because I was trying to scrabble together pages, I wrote in a panic and edited myself emotionally less, so the work came from a more vulnerable place. I wanted to write something that felt honest and urgent. When my teachers asked me whether I had any real intention behind my project and I couldn’t articulate an answer, I started Luster. I wrote it when I was in NYU’s MFA programme, which I’d come to with an entirely different novel. Leilani, 31, spoke from her home in Brooklyn. Cue a plethora of razor-sharp, caustically funny insights into the politics of race, gender and desire. After getting fired from an entry-level publishing job and ground down by the gig economy, Edie moves in with her middle-aged white lover, his white wife, and their (adopted) black daughter in the suburbs. Now published in paperback, it tells the story of Edie, a young black woman trying to find her way as a painter in New York City. R aven Leilani is the author of Luster, a kinetic, award-winning debut novel whose fans include Barack Obama. Sarah K L WilsonFly With the Arrow (Book 1). With her bodiless friend Grosbeak along for the ride and the great game of crowns and thrones still being played out across the nations, will Izolda's endless common sense still be enough to rescue her from disaster? Or will she fall prey to the terrible ambitions of her enemies?ĭANCE WITH THE SWORD is the second book in the Bluebeard's Secret series following the eerie and romantic story of FLY WITH THE ARROW. Wilson loves happy endings, stories that push things just a little. Worse yet, Izolda has unwittingly become a pawn in a deadly dance between two Wittenbrand, snatched from the claws of one of them only to be stolen back by the other. If Izolda had been asked if she wanted to be rescued from her would-be bridegroom and returned to her home and family, she would have eagerly agreed to go, but now that she is back in the mortal world, she is quickly discovering that home, family and even the inclinations of her own heart are not what she expected. With the heart of the Wittenhame still ringing from Izolda's actions and her new husband shocked at her betrayal, the future seems very grim indeed. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Bourdieu theory of distinctionThe schemes of the habitus, the primary forms of classification, owe their specific efficacy to the fact that they function below the level of consciousness and language, beyond the reach of introspective scrutiny or control by the will. Taste is an acquired disposition to ‘differentiate’ and ‘appreciate’, as Kant says - in other words, to establish and mark differences by a process of distinction which is not (or not necessarily) a distinct knowledge, in Leibniz’s sense, since it ensures recognition (in the ordinary sense) of the object without implying knowledge of the distinctive features which define it. 1984, translated by Richard Nice, published by Harvard University Press, 1984, 604pp. A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste. They explained that the technique had thus far been used for single images, because each required massive computer power. At least they knew what we were talking about. I wanted a mechanical process.įinally, we went to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. But photographic techniques look just like that – darkroom manipulation of the filmed image. None of the special-effects houses had computers or were even thinking about them all they could do were variations on photographic techniques. At this time, film special effects were limited to purely photographic processes, such as solarization – the technique used, for example, to make the shimmery, bizarre-colored landscapes in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Such a process had never been used for motion picture films before, and none of the special-effects houses even knew what we were talking about. I wanted to film the scenes and then manipulate the film with a computer. I proposed a rather simple solution: to show the point of view of a machine, use a machine. But what special-effects technique would best suggest a machine’s point of view? The film required us to show the point of view of the main robot, played by Yul Brynner. In 1973, I made a movie called Westworld, which was a fantasy about robots. Everything’s digital these days, but it wasn’t always so. Still, fans of the series will plunge right in." Kirkus Reviews concluded its review: "Cuddly family/romance/alien-contact saga with useful ideas but far too many characters distinguishable only by their silly names.
